A couple of hours drive down the coast from Malaga, just past Gibraltar, you will find some of the most amazing beaches in Spain. Tarifa is Spains version of Surfers Paradise as it is considered one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in the world.

Miles and miles of white sand that has been purified by the Atlantic currents, and still very much free from the rubbish one can sometimes find along the beaches of the Mediterranean, Tarifa is the place to visit when you get to the Atlantic coast of Spain, or Costa de Luz as it is also called. On a clear day you will be able to see across to the Moroccoan coast, which is only about 7 miles accross the Gibraltar straight.

Although the beaches in Tarifa are very popular with the surfers because of the stabile atlantic winds creating perfect conditions, it is also well known for their birdlife, and for its beautiful historic buildings and cities. The town of Tarifa was actually the first point of the Moorish invation in AD711 (source: Andalucia.com).

For those of you who have read Paulo Coelho’s book “The Alchemist” will also recognize that Tarifa was the town that the sheperd boy visited on his way to find his treasure, that next took him accross the Gibraltar straight to Morocco. Take the book with you to the beach and watch accross the ocean to the coast of Africa as you read about his inspiring journey.

Things to do in Tarifa:

Windsurfing and kitesurfing - whether you are an experienced surfer or a newbie, this is well worth a try while there.

Visit Morocco - Take a day and visit the lively souks in Tangier and experience life on the other side of the Gibraltar straight.

Soak up the atmosphere of all the great tapas bars and cafes, and of course try some of the fresh local seafood.

While reading up on Tarifa we can also recommend to check out the many attractions of Malaga.

The annual feria in Malaga takes place each August and is a massive street celebration that turns the city on its head and attracts lots of visitors. The history behind the feria is the celebration of Isabella and Ferdinand winning back control of the city back in 1487 (source: andalucia.com).

The feria starts with an impressive firework show that is not to be missed, and in the following days the people of Malaga takes to the street and you often find that they dress in traditional clothing, which means you find the women in the colorful flamenco dresses. During day time the party is very much in the streets, with the marques de larios as the center of the party.

Although Sevilla is the official capital of Andalucia, many consider Malaga to be the capital of Costa del Sol as it is the hub for most people travelling to the region, and it has come a long way since the days as the poor cousin to the south.

Malaga has now become a destination of itself and not just the place where the planes land as people are heading to the more famous destinations around it, such as Marbella and other beach holiday places along the Costa del Sol. The birth place of Pablo Picasso and Antonio Banderas now houses the acclaimed Picasso Museum in the heart of the city center.During semana santa (Easter) one can also often find that Antonio Banderas is taking part in the festivites and the parades in the city.

But that is not the only tourist attraction within the city of Malaga. You also find great historic monuments like the Baroque Cathedral, also known as ‘La Manquita’, and on the hill side of Malaga you find the Parador hotel, once a Moorish castle, and the Moorish Alcazaba fortress, giving a very panoramic view of Malaga and the port from the heart of Moorish Malaga.

The city of Malaga has also become a destination for shoppers with Calle Marques de Larios being the center of the attention with its many busy chic boutiques, designer shops, classy cafes and teterias (moorish tearooms). Just off Calle Larios, along the side streets, you will also find many tapas bars and reastaurants, small and interesting shops, and the fresh food market, Mercado Central de Atarazanas.

When tired from shopping and in need of cooling down the beach is only a few minutes walk away through the tree lined streets of the Alameda. The beach might not hold the same standards as many of the beaches in the surrounding areas, but its proximity to the city center makes it a popular destination for both tourists and locals.

Malaga has been going through a lot of renovations in the last few years in preparation for being the European Capital of Culture in 2016. So be prepared to see the city of Malaga becoming more beautiful for each passing year.
