Malaga the capital of Costa del Sol

By admin • Jun 3rd, 2008 • Category: places to visit

Although Sevilla is the official capital of Andalucia, many consider Malaga to be the capital of Costa del Sol as it is the hub for most people travelling to the region, and it has come a long way since the days as the poor cousin to the south.

Malaga has now become a destination of itself and not just the place where the planes land as people are heading to the more famous destinations around it, such as Marbella and other beach holiday places along the Costa del Sol. The birth place of Pablo Picasso and Antonio Banderas now houses the acclaimed Picasso Museum in the heart of the city center.During semana santa (Easter) one can also often find that Antonio Banderas is taking part in the festivites and the parades in the city.

But that is not the only tourist attraction within the city of Malaga. You also find great historic monuments like the Baroque Cathedral, also known as ‘La Manquita’, and on the hill side of Malaga you find the Parador hotel, once a Moorish castle, and the Moorish Alcazaba fortress, giving a very panoramic view of Malaga and the port from the heart of Moorish Malaga.

The city of Malaga has also become a destination for shoppers with Calle Marques de Larios being the center of the attention with its many busy chic boutiques, designer shops, classy cafes and teterias (moorish tearooms). Just off Calle Larios, along the side streets, you will also find many tapas bars and reastaurants, small and interesting shops, and the fresh food market, Mercado Central de Atarazanas.

When tired from shopping and in need of cooling down the beach is only a few minutes walk away through the tree lined streets of the Alameda. The beach might not hold the same standards as many of the beaches in the surrounding areas, but its proximity to the city center makes it a popular destination for both tourists and locals.

Malaga has been going through a lot of renovations in the last few years in preparation for being the European Capital of Culture in 2016. So be prepared to see the city of Malaga becoming more beautiful for each passing year.
