Spains surfer paradise - Tarifa
By admin • Jul 7th, 2008 • Category: places to visitA couple of hours drive down the coast from Malaga, just past Gibraltar, you will find some of the most amazing beaches in Spain. Tarifa is Spains version of Surfers Paradise as it is considered one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in the world.

Miles and miles of white sand that has been purified by the Atlantic currents, and still very much free from the rubbish one can sometimes find along the beaches of the Mediterranean, Tarifa is the place to visit when you get to the Atlantic coast of Spain, or Costa de Luz as it is also called. On a clear day you will be able to see across to the Moroccoan coast, which is only about 7 miles accross the Gibraltar straight.
Although the beaches in Tarifa are very popular with the surfers because of the stabile atlantic winds creating perfect conditions, it is also well known for their birdlife, and for its beautiful historic buildings and cities. The town of Tarifa was actually the first point of the Moorish invation in AD711 (source: Andalucia.com).

For those of you who have read Paulo Coelho’s book “The Alchemist” will also recognize that Tarifa was the town that the sheperd boy visited on his way to find his treasure, that next took him accross the Gibraltar straight to Morocco. Take the book with you to the beach and watch accross the ocean to the coast of Africa as you read about his inspiring journey.
Things to do in Tarifa:
- Windsurfing and kitesurfing - whether you are an experienced surfer or a newbie, this is well worth a try while there.
- Visit Morocco - Take a day and visit the lively souks in Tangier and experience life on the other side of the Gibraltar straight.
- Soak up the atmosphere of all the great tapas bars and cafes, and of course try some of the fresh local seafood.
While reading up on Tarifa we can also recommend to check out the many attractions of Malaga.
